I finished this collage today in honor of Nikole Hannah-Jones. I started the piece with my daughter in mind much the way many of Hannah-Jones’ pieces start, too. I’m celebrating her because she is someone who keeps her eyes on the stories of us and tells the portions of them that so many would rather we forget. Like her, the womxn and girls in my collage are people with stories, people whose value deserves to be seen, and people whose voices deserve to be heard. If I continued this collage with all the deserving womxn I can think of, it would make its way around the sun right along with NHJ as she heads into another year of life. I hope I get to keep celebrating us! Ms. Hannah-Jones, thank you for everything!
